Snowy Egret (Egretta thula)

When a gust of wind came from behind, this Snowy Egret showed off its style. Looking at the play of its feathers, I could begin to see why this bird was hunted almost to extinction in the late 19th century for its feathers. They were worth more than their weight in gold. Fancy ladies had to have egret feathers for their hats. The modern bird conservation movement started largely in opposition to the fashionistic massacre of these lovely creatures.
