When the tide is moving out and the water’s edge is already quite shallow, a lot of the young little fishes don’t seem to understand yet that they’ve become very visible and accessible. But the Snowy Egret understands this and is taking advantage. Seizing the moment, the bird enjoys the avian version of fast food. With lightning pecks in every direction, the bird snaps up little tidbits hardly worth mentioning by themselves, but meaningful in quantity, and every now and then there’s a heftier bite or two that goes down the hatch without ceremony. The Snowy Egret can handle much bigger prey if available.
