Imagine getting up in the morning and being surrounded by food. with every step you take, your knees and elbows brush against food, there’s food everywhere, all you have to do is open your mouth and eat it. That’s more or less the situation of these Golden-crowned Sparrows in these days of fresh new grass. When the ground is dry and full of seeds, they eat seeds. When the universe offers a cornucopia of salad greens, they eat salad.
Do you wonder, as did I, where the expression “salad days” comes from? It comes from Shakespeare, like so much else. For details and the long tail since then, check out this Wikipedia article (and join me in donating to Wikipedia, a vital free resource).
