Another sign of the season is the return of the Golden-crowned Sparrow. This individual perched on a coyote bush inside the Burrowing Owl sanctuary not long after sunrise.
Caroline Warner has a wonderful piece about the Golden-crowned Sparrow in the current issue of Bay Nature. This bird, weighing little more than an ounce, flies all the way to the tundra in British Columbia and Alaska in the spring and all the way back here in the fall. Scientists at Point Blue, the local conservancy organization, hold a party when they arrive.
