Standout Sparrow

Golden-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia atricapilla)

This sparrow perched on a fennel bush with half a dozen House Finches. It stood out. The Golden-crowned Sparrow is bigger than those finches and bigger than other sparrows in the park. This individual appeared to be the only one of its kind in the immediate vicinity. They breed up in the far north in summer and come here to spend the winter. I’ve photographed them and written about them several times, so I’ll just note here that it’s a lovely bird to look at.
