Hanging In

Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia) First Owl on the left.

Unfazed by temperatures a few degrees above freezing and a series of downpours, both the owls that arrived in Cesar Chavez Park on November 2 remained steadfast in their chosen spots on the day after Christmas. In these video images, taken December 26 at around 9 a.m., both owls appeared alert and unharmed. The First Owl remained in its new position, fully exposed to the sky; it still can be seen only from the Open Circle Viewpoint, which requires stepping across a fence, and you need optical zoom. The Second Owl remains in the central circle, easily visible to all who have eyes to see. So far the wintery clime has not prodded these birds to depart for warmer digs.
