Petition to Save the Owls
The Burrowing Owls in the park, when they come, deserve the best protection we can offer. The current fence around the Burrowing Owl Sanctuary in the northeast corner of the park is not adequate. It is too low and has big gaps between the cables. Off-leash dogs easily breach the fence and invade the owl habitat. Owls have been killed and injured. The owls need a better fence.
The petition calls on the City of Berkeley to approve a fence that gives the owls more security. This project will not cost the City money. The Chavez Park Conservancy will pay for the materials and volunteers will do the work.
Petition to Berkeley City Council And Berkeley City Manager
I love the Burrowing Owls. They deserve protection. The existing fence is not adequate to protect them. The owls need a better fence, tall and tight enough to give them security. And the fence route needs to be amended so that the Open Circle viewpoint (“the Spiral”) is open to the public all year round. Please take care of this promptly before the Burrowing Owls come this winter.
Save the Owls!
An additional 310 paper-and-ink signatures were collected Sept. 11 2022 at the Solano Stroll.

Please put up an adequate fence to protect the owls!
The California population of burrowing owls is in dire jeopardy, particularly in the bay area. Burrowing owls are already protected in many ways by state and federal law but are currently being considered by CDFW for additional protection under the California Endangered Species Act. There is no justification for allowing this already imperiled population of animals to be easily injured and killed by humans and their pets when a simple fence improvement would vastly reduce this situation.
Please protect our birds

The owls at CesarChavez Park stand like sentinels guarding nature that is trying to come back despite our earlier needs to have dumps somewhere for all our detritus.
The park is a genuine effort to reach for what is good for the future.
Please help the owls to stay there safely for as long as they are wanting to show up and as they are reminding us that “might makes right” is not always the best value.
They are so small compared to us and our dogs yet they can take care of their lives there and greet us when we come walking by if we use our imaginations to truly keep them safe from dogs off leash.
Please reconsider your decision to leave the existing fence in place.
As a life-long Berkeley resident, I feel very strongly that we must protect what wildlife is left on this planet.
Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
