Hovering Hawk
From its behavior this bird seemed like a White-tailed Kite. It hovered and fluttered its wings to hold a fixed position just like the kite. In a nearer light it became clear this was a different bird. Where the kite is white with a strongly defined eye patch, this bird’s head was brown, and so was the leading edge of its wings. I’m guessing it was that Red-Shouldered Hawk I saw a few weeks ago, but it might have been a Red-tailed Hawk or something else entirely. I maneuvered to get a better photo, but the bird had other ideas and I never got that ideal shot from underneath where both its flight profile and its underwing coloring would be clear. For what it may be worth, here’s what I got.
