Gate Repaired, Shy Owl Back

Out of view Monday and Tuesday, the Shy Owl was back in its accustomed spot Wednesday morning. The start of the video shows the location. Much to the delight of park visitors, it was easily visible in the low morning sun if you knew to look for it. Here is a video taken this morning:

When I first began watching this owl this morning, it showed very little motion. It yawned and repeatedly nodded off into little naps. It had probably been active for hours foraging during the night. But then it spun up into a high level of activity, preening and stretching. The video captures a brief sample of this action.

Today also the nearby south gate to the seasonal Burrowing Owl Sanctuary was repaired, after being vandalized and down for more than a week. Two of the crocheted Burrowing Owls created last year by Carol Denney are suspended from the top wire. Did the repair of this gate reassure the owl that it was safe to come out again?

While I watched this morning, I saw the owl move about one foot to its right and step into a depression or a ditch in which it disappeared from sight. It didn’t look like it dove into a burrow. It just looked like a low spot. From time to time it would raise its head from there and peek out. It stayed there for a few minutes and then resumed its earlier position. Possibly the owl hid in this low spot on Monday and Tuesday while its human fan club searched for it.

Thank you so much, Marty, for the update. I went a few days ago and could not find Shy Owl, but then remembered the previous video that showed exactly where she was, so I went back and saw her within seconds! I so hope she survives and more arrive.
