Yipper Revealed

Someone taught me years ago that a certain high-pitched yipping came from a ground squirrel, not a bird. But until now I had never seen one do it. This individual yipped on and on, so that I was able to spot it behind its screen of vegetation and get it in focus.

What was all that yipping about? Couldn’t have been an alarm signal, as its fellow squirrel inches behind it appeared completely at rest. Mating call? Had no answer. Maybe the little fellow had a toothache or an upset stomach from eating too many California Poppies. Hiccups?
