What Was It?
This carcass has been laying just off the paved perimeter path in the northeast corner of the park (very near the Burrowing Owl preserve) for about three weeks. It’s clearly a mammal larger than a rat, gopher, or ground squirrel. It measures about 24 inches including the tail. In this area I have seen and photographed a raccoon, and about a month ago I smelled but did not see a skunk. I’ve also seen and photographed jackrabbits in this area, but this animal was not a rabbit — look at the length of its tail. If anyone with expertise in this area can identify it please shoot me an email. Thank you.
