This bird showed up on May 21 in the fennel forest on the north side where the Red-winged Blackbirds and House Finches are nesting. It looks like a recent hatchling, but it certainly isn’t a House Finch and it doesn’t resemble a blackbird chick. A blackbird mom visited it and stayed near it for a few minutes as I watched but then moved off.
I’m wondering if this is a cowbird chick. I recently saw an adult Brown-headed Cowbird (see tomorrow’s post) and of course they are known to lay their eggs in the nests of other species, including blackbirds’. And cowbird chicks hatch sooner than the others, and are bigger. So this is a possibility. But I’ve never seen a cowbird chick before and the picture isn’t clear enough for the Merlin Bird ID app to help out.
