Well-fed Wigeons

This female American Wigeon looks in the prime of health as she stands atop a tiny island just south of the Open Circle viewpoint promontory. A male cruises nearby, looking just as plump, but he still has an appetite for a bit more of that greenery growing abundantly on the nearby rocks. She ignores him as he passes, then stretches out a leg, then resumes her pose.

The Cornell bird lab website says that these birds “tend to sit on the water with their heads pulled down, giving them a no-necked look.” That may be true most of the time, but this female here stands with her head up and plenty of neck showing.
