Winter and spring are the best times for sunsets because there’s the best chance of clouds in the sky. The sun is only the painter; it needs a dramatic canvas to display its glory.
Yesterday (1/27/15) was a rather unusual sunset. There was a heavy bank of fog on the horizon that blocked out the sun and kept the higher clouds from showing much color. But after the sun had dropped below the horizon, the patch of clouds behind the Golden Gate Bridge unexpectedly lit up pink, red, and purple, almost as if a stage manager somewhere had cued some floodlights. It was surreal.
