Top of a Rock

Ground Squirrels (Otospermophilus beecheyi)

They were so cute I couldn’t resist. It helps to know there was a stiff wind blowing from left to right. The squirrel on the left was acting as a bit of a windbreak for the one that was eating. They could have easily chosen a spot with less wind. But there was something about perching back to back on top of a rock that was irresistible. They were probably teenagers, born in April or May. Ground squirrels provide a simple-minded observer, such as myself, with endless entertainment.

Maybe the one on the top of the rock was “watching out” for predators while the more distracted(?) one ate?
