The Uncommon Common Sparrow
According to the Audubon bird website, this sparrow is “abundant and widespread.” The Cornell bird lab website seconds the motion, calling this bird “one of the most numerous songbirds” around.
Well, that may be true elsewhere, but here in Cesar Chavez Park I’ve only seen them between November and March, and then only a handful of them, almost always in the same spot on the east side of the park, a bit south of the Open Circle viewpoint, between the paved trail and the water. That’s where I saw two of them, possibly three, this morning, flitting about among the rip-rap, pecking at the dirt between the rocks.
They didn’t hold still long enough for me to get usable video, so a couple of still shots is the best I can do for now. You can read more about this bird in my post of last November, and there is a bit of video in my post of this past March.
Isn’t it a pretty bird, though?
