Crazy Squirrel
We’re accustomed to thinking of big raptors like this Red-tailed Hawk terrorizing little mammals such as Ground Squirrels. But photographer Phil Rowntree’s camera has caught the flipside. This squirrel, with its tail high and red, has chased the hawk off its perch and sent it flapping away in fear for its life. Look at the bird’s talons, spread wide as if in panic. This is a SuperSquirrel, fearless and bold, and a little bit (OK, very) crazy for confronting a deadly raptor. It reminds me of the old Indian tale of the Valiant Chattee-maker, where a besoused little man mistook a man-eating tiger for his donkey and rode it home … a fine and funny tale, go read it.
