Song, Breakfast

This White-crowned Sparrow gave a little concert in the early sun, and then pounced on nature’s breakfast of fennel seeds, conveniently laid out before it.

Fennel is truly the gift that keeps on giving for little feathered creatures. Here it is late March and the tender new shoots of fennel are already sprouting, and the Red-winged Blackbirds are hot into their spring mating rituals, but last year’s fennel seeds are still providing sustenance for all who want it. Some of last year’s seeds will probably still be available on the older stalks when this year’s flowers have ripened into a new set of fresh seeds late this summer.
