This bird had been floating asleep almost every day for a week up near the Open Circle Viewpoint, and I could not figure out what it was. Then finally I saw it momentarily awake, pulling its beak out of its back feathers, and a light dawned on me. It’s a female Surf Scoter.

What in the world it’s doing here all by itself, sleeping the days away, is a mystery. I’ve seen other migrants spend a day or two and then move on, but staying as long as this one has is unusual. Birds, like people, are social creatures, but they’re also individuals. Some of them listen to a different drummer. Or no drummer at all …
