These members of the Alpha chapter of the Sigma Pi Alpha sorority at UC Berkeley were out doing a Sunday morning of public service in the park. With blue gloves and white plastic bags they were picking up trash.
Angela Ortiz, chapter President, commented:
We are a Chicana/Latina sorority at UC Berkeley. Sigma Pi Alpha was founded in the spring of 1996 by nine women who saw the need to create a close network. Sigma Pi Alpha addresses the academic, cultural, communal, and social needs of its members while working to promote higher education to Chicana/Latina youth. Our sisters felt that our environment is often is neglected which ultimately harms our communities. Our park cleanup was a first step in addressing these issues.
Another park visitor who stopped to applaud them said it seemed to her that there was an extraordinary amount of trash in the park this morning and she was very glad to see the sorority sisters out there doing good work. One of the members explained to me that they did various kinds of public service and this was their week to do Cesar Chavez Park.
Much appreciated, thank you, sisters; come back more often.
