Rooting Around

Ground Squirrels (Otospermophilus beecheyi)

There was plenty of stand-up squirrel food, and several squirrels were taking advantage of it, but this little family had a powerful yearning for roots. The parent (left) bit off sizeable chunks of caked dirt to get at the prized root nodules. What are the new pups to do except follow the parent’s lead? Only thing, there didn’t seem to be room enough in the dig for both pups, so a regular sibling wrestling match broke out, and the parent got some collateral damage in the process. But no one was hurt. It was all part of being a furry family.
