Pelicans at Work
Brown Pelicans were hard at work this morning, taking off, soaring, then plunge-diving for fish, and repeat. The hunting must have been good, or they were very hungry, or both; they hardly rested between dives. The glassy water must have exposed fish several feet below the surface to the pelicans’ penetrating vision. The fish swam singly here and there, and did not form a school, or the pelicans would have gathered in far greater strength than the five or six that worked the North Basin waters. When done, these few joined a larger flock of pelicans rising from the south and they all headed westward.
