Owls’ Day 19

Both of the Burrowing Owls first spotted in the park on Nov. 2 were still here and in the same spots this morning. The First Owl, which you can see only from the Open Circle Viewpoint, which requires stepping over the sagging Art Deco fence, stood on one leg as usual, but this time faced forward (south). In the photo, the bird looks stern, but was probably just lowering its shades against the early morning sun. The Second Owl, up in the inner circle of the seasonal Burrowing Owl Sanctuary, also mostly faced away from the sun. My camera caught it during a few seconds when it faced toward me. Who wants to see photos of the back of its head?

I had the pleasure and the honor of meeting Rick Lewis at the owl site this morning. Rick is an expert photographer with professional equipment whose work has graced the cover and the insides of numerous bird and nature journals, including our local Bay Nature and Audubon.
