Owl Persists

Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia)

The Burrowing Owl seen four days ago in the Nature Area on the north side of the park is still here. It’s so well hidden that it might well have been there for weeks without being noticed. It was very alert this morning, keeping its eyes mostly zeroed in on folks looking at it from the paved perimeter trail. Then it got bored with watching us and slipped down into a hole, or just into the low weeds, out of sight for a while. I filmed video but the wind made the camera shake too much; in any event, during the video the bird took no action other than an occasional swivel of the head.

Yesterday early morning before I got there this bird stood on level ground and displayed its whole body for a while, and photographer James Kusz was there. Here is his photo from December 6:
