Owl at Sunset

Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) Photo Pete Kelly

This lovely snapshot of the Burrowing Owl in the Nature Area on the north side of the park near sunset on December 6 is by park visitor Peter Kelly. Thank you, Peter!

Peter writes: “I live in downtown Oakland, and have been coming to the park since quarantine started. I was inspired to see the owls had been sighted again this year. I tried to find it a few weeks ago back in November to no avail, and was lucky enough to find him on my second owl-spotting excursion.
This was my first time seeing burrowing owls ever! This little fellow was quite hard to spot, but visible from the paved path. But it disappeared from view if you went a meter in either direction.”
