Owl and Sparrow

Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) and Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis) November 11 2020

The Burrowing Owl that took up residence in the Nature Area on the north side of the park the day before yesterday — or at least was first spotted then — got a visit this morning from a Savannah Sparrow. This was probably quite coincidental and went without incident. The sparrow eats seeds and very small bugs. The owl eats larger bugs and possibly very small herps and mammals. There is no food competition between them, and the sparrow is not interested in the burrow that the owl has borrowed from the Ground Squirrels. So, after a few moments of eyeing one another, the two broke off visual contact and went about their respective concerns, which in the owls’ case included scratching and preening.
