Soundtrack by Bensound.comWhat Disturbs a Burrowing OwlThis Burrowing Owl stood on a rock near the water on the north side of Cesar Chavez Park on October 16, 2018. The owl faced south. Its position was about seven yards from the near edge of a four foot wide paved trail that had narrow gravel trails running on either side of it. A major freeway and railroad tracks lay about three quarters of a mile to the east. There was a constant background noise from highway and train traffic. Shown are excerpts from a half-hour video that is also posted on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uw82q4-rGL8), showing how the owl reacted to various events in the environment: train horns, planes, runners, people talking, drones, and an off-leash dog. The owl displayed major alarm, in the form of posture and expression, only to the passing dog.
