The monster-size bush of Himalayan blackberries at the corner of Marina Boulevard and the Virginia Street Extension is having an off year. There is the usual ton of berries, but they’re mostly smaller than usual, often shriveled and malformed, and even the ripest black ones are not very sweet. The finches and other birds that visit this thorny jungle patch probably won’t care, but we sugar-craving humans may be disappointed. If there are sweet juicy king-size berries in the bush they’ll likely be found at the top, closest to the sun, where only the birds can get at them. Check out Finches in Blackberry August 21 2018 for comparison.
