If I’m not mistaken, this is a young Ground Squirrel (Otospermophilus Beecheyi) probably on one of its first outings beyond the maternal burrow. It’s quite a bit smaller than its elders. Its timing is good, as most of the birds of prey that could take it have gone north for the season.
