New Flare Station Delivered
The rusty old leaning tower on the east side of the park will soon be history, as the new flare station equipment has just been delivered. The new equipment is shorter and has a smaller capacity to serve the declining volume of landfill gas that the refuse buried under the park’s surface generates. The gas flow has been too low to operate the bigger flare station installed in 1989. The new equipment is not yet operational. It will take more than a month of testing and adjusting before the system can be switched over and the old equipment hauled away.
The underground story of the park makes a fascinating drama of politics, science, and engineering. I’m working on a longer piece about it; stay tuned.
