The evolutionary descent of birds from dinosaurs becomes much easier to grasp when watching pelicans at work. This pair of Brown Pelicans was hunting in the Bay on the western shore of the park Wednesday morning. They were so close to land that even a modest telephoto lens could catch a view of what a strange and complex flying contraption the pelican is. One wonders how it manages to pull all its gangly moving parts together in a coordinated way. It looks so antiquated, so unstreamlined on takeoff and landing — and yet, it accomplishes miracles of smooth flight, sometimes just inches from the water surface, and it dives with power and accuracy. These two seemed to have little trouble getting their breakfast.
