This coot was paddling along energetically pecking at the water, left and right and all around. I thought maybe it had eaten some funny seaweed and wasn’t right in the head. Then I saw another, and a third, doing the same thing. There must have been some tiny bugs in the water, just under the surface, and the nutritional value of these midges must have outweighed the energy expenditure required to nab them. Even with my lens maxed out I could not see the object of the bird’s attention. A Ruddy Duck cruising very nearby saw nothing of interest.
