Lesser Goldfinch

Finches both red and yellow populated the tree crowns in the Native Plant Area as the sun’s rays rose on this clear morning. I don’t see the yellow ones — they are Lesser Goldfinch or Spinus psaltria — as often as the red ones (House Finch) here so I took a lot of pictures, most of them indistinguishable. We have seen these in numbers when we had our backyard feeder up. In this season the park is an extended feeder, with seeds of several kinds plentiful. This little flock was feeding on fennel seeds on the northwestern ridge.
