Kite in Moon

Sometimes birds that want their portraits made will not only sit still, they’ll pose against an attractive background. This White-tailed Kite had it all. It perched on a high branch in easy camera range and managed to have the waning full moon right behind it. A photographer’s dream! Better yet, the bird performed a series of raspy calls, and at one time opened its beak as wide as it would go in a full-bore yawn.

This is very probably the same kite, or a member of the same pair, that I’ve photographed recently, as in Bird’s Gotta Eat, Kite Comfort, High Pair, and others. Its mate perched quietly high on a neighboring evergreen.
