The Marbled Godwit that somehow lost its left leg below the knee is still alive and functioning on the mudflats of the Schoolhouse Creek delta. I first noticed this bird on December 26 last year, and then again on February 16. Although the bird appears to be feeding itself OK, and can fly, it’s paying a social price. Each time that I’ve seen it, it’s the only Marbled Godwit in the area. Usually these birds show up in small groups. Losing a leg is a serious injury, especially if you only have two. The injury seems to have isolated the bird from its feathered fellows.
