Hungry
This little bird was so hungry it paid no attention to the human and his camera equipment that towered over him not twelve feet away. By contrast, its cousins the House Finches took flight when a human came within 30 feet. On the video, House Finches provided a background concert. The Lesser Goldfinch eats seeds and other plant matter such as berries, fruits, new leaves, and flower buds; it’s almost exclusively vegetarian. It isn’t picky; it’ll eat seeds from more than 50 different kinds of plants, including weeds, so it’s a helpful ally in weed control. It needs water; if no natural water is available, it readily goes to dripping faucets, dog dishes, or birdbaths. This bird almost certainly nests here; the female does most of the work, with the male sometimes supplying materials. A great variety of trees and bushes serves as nesting habitat.
