As I watched, a Great Blue Heron flew in from the North Basin and landed on the grass near the southeast corner of the park. It had only begun to get its bearings when an off-leash German Shepherd, very far out of bounds, came racing behind the bird, with the dog’s owner vainly whistling in the background. The bird took off and landed on the grassy strip next to the hotel parking lot. That turned out to be a lucky spot for the bird, but not so lucky for a gopher.
