From Scratch

Snowy Egret (Egretta thula)

The Snowy Egret is not content with snagging edibles that come floating on the tide. It makes some of its meals “from scratch.” Literally, the bird vigorously scratches the bottom and stirs up whatever is hiding in the mud there. It can scratch with either foot. That method doesn’t get it a big feast, but all the little tidbits do add up. I haven’t seen any other bird species use this method.
