First Goldeneye of the Season

Common Goldeneye

Not five yards from shore at the south end of the North Basin, untroubled by whitecaps and a gusty northeastern wind, this iridescent green-headed duck announced the arrival of another winter regular species here: the Goldeneyes.  This male was the only one of its kind that I saw today; there might have been dozens more further out in the basin, out of sight.  We’ll see in the coming days.  It’s looking like a full and interesting winter bird season, so far.
