Fine Finches in the Fennel

I must have OCD, I can’t resist alliterative titles. Anyway, here’s another finch group picture — my first since January 2010 — that might work for a holiday greeting card. This group is a bit unusual in that seven of the eight birds appear to be females. The males have the reddish plumage on their heads and chests. This gathering convened in the Fennel forest on the north end of the park, taking advantage of the first rays of the sunrise at 7:16 a.m. For more about the interesting and unusual history of the misnamed House Finch, check out the Cornell bird lab and the Audubon websites.
