Finch for Breakfast?

The Great Egret likes creatures of the water. It likes creatures of the earth. So why not creatures of the air? This feathered hunter with the deadly yellow beak had a finch breakfast in mind this morning as it stalked among the fennel bushes on the north side of the park. It even wiggled its long neck from side to side in anticipation. But the smaller birds always seemed to keep at least one fennel stalk between themselves and their hunter. After some long minutes of tense immobility, the big carnivore gave up, turned away, and flew off to a south side slope to try its luck with gophers and voles.
