Most bird photos have a documentary intent: to show what the creature looks like in its natural habitat, or to record some interesting behavior. The beauty in these images is the beauty of the creature, faithfully rendered. A select few bird images rise to the level of art. Phil Rowntree’s image of a very ordinary American Crow silhouetted against the full moon is one of these. It took great timing and a big measure of luck to get the opportunity for this shot, and good skill with the camera to nail it.
