Coot Story
Last year, there were times when American Coots held big family reunions numbering many dozens. Then their ranks thinned and a small group of five or six hung out on the northeast corner of the park. Then only one remained, this one. About a month ago it had a companion, but that didn’t work out, and this coot is alone again. Regardless of its social situation, a bird needs to stretch and keep up its appearance. Chances are that larger numbers will come visiting again as the winter season advances.
Coots are sociable with other birds, including ducks , but they are not ducks. They’re rails, more closely related to cranes than to Mallards. You can watch a mock documentary about that issue here.
