The Coot convention of a week ago snowballed into a Coot mega-flock larger than any I’ve seen them achieve. There were well over a hundred Coot, sometimes forming one big raft, sometimes dividing into two and three groups. At the time I followed them, some of them dove and picked up marine vegetation from the bottom. It was not their time for preening. Pressed up close to one another, the birds did a lot of quick shakes with their heads from side to side. I wonder what that is about.
