This pair of American Coots look to be year-round residents of the park. At low tide on this day, they were taking care of Coot business: scratching, preening, snacking on fresh green seaweed. The video also offers a peek at the Coot’s unusual feet. They’re not webbed, like a duck’s. (Coots are not ducks.) They have pockets that fill and empty as they paddle, very efficiently. The lack of a web gives the Coot added maneuverability on land.
