Here’s another free thinker. Like the scaup I photographed a few days earlier (link), this Bufflehead is not a conformist to the traditions of the flock. They passed through here by the hundreds many weeks ago on their way north to their breeding grounds. So what? Not all birds think alike. This one has a mind of his own, and if he decides to join the breeding mob at all, he will do so on his own timetable. Meanwhile he’s found a rock to rest on and soak up the rays. It’s not only the males who think independently. Two years ago a Bufflehead female ignored the migration and stayed here through August.
