A set of colorful tents, flags, and banners in the sheltered picnic area just east of the forested ridge in the park harbored a celebration of Buddha’s birthday by about thirty Tibetan-speaking participants on Saturday afternoon. An educational talk in one set of tents, in the Tibetan language, involving both grownups and children, was followed by a picnic meal in another. The leader of the talk, a local Tibetan language teacher who wore a Warriors t-shirt, explained to me afterward that Buddha’s birthday on the Tibetan calendar was May 29 but for practical reasons they could hold the celebration only today. Due to operator error I lost the cellphone video that had the teacher’s name. Participants in the celebration belonged to one or more of the Tibetan community centers in the East Bay.
