Brewers Blackbird
This Brewer's Blackbird female perched on a dry fennel stalk above a blackberry patch near Cesar Chavez Park in Berkeley. The males of the species are solid black with iridescent highlights in bright sun, and contrasting pale yellow eyes. The female is plain brownish/grayish with black eyes. These birds are big insect eaters, and the blackberry patch where she perched attracted a lot of bugs and was a draw for other bug-eating birds like Barn Swallows and Black Phoebes.

Pretty Pied Pigeon
Among the small flock of Rock Pigeons in the park this morning was this unusually colored individual. Pigeon fanciers would probably term this a "Checkered" or "Pied" variety. I thought it was quite pretty.

Rock Pigeons
Usually only one or two, rarely four Rock Pigeons are active in Cesar Chavez Park. This afternoon there was a flock of sixteen, almost as if it were a park in the city.

Says Phoebe on Water
This Say's Phoebe on the north side of Cesar Chavez Park took its hunt out over the water and dipped in, even though it is not a waterbird.

Says Phoebe on Water SloMo
This Say's Phoebe dipped into the water to make a catch. This is a slow-motion video.

Turkey Vulture In the Sun
Rarely seen in Cesar Chavez Park, this Turkey Vulture settled in the sun a few steps from a paved walkway. As two-legged and four-legged traffic passed by, the bird reconsidered.

Wild Turkeys in Cesar Chavez Park
Four wild turkeys, a male and three females, appeared in Cesar Chavez Park this morning, the first sighting of these birds in tis location (to my knowledge). They seemed undisturbed by the nearness of people and proceeded north, deeper into the park, along the west side paved perimeter trail.
