Bird Nap

It was just before 5 in the afternoon, and you’d expect birds to be up and about getting their evening meal. But not these! Up on the east shore of the (now closed) Burrowing Owl Sanctuary, these Willets kept company with a female Surf Scoter, all having a quiet afternoon nap.
I’ve seen a number of Surf Scoters, but this is the first one I’ve seen out of the water, resting on a rock. I saw no other birds of its feather in the vicinity. Birds are flock creatures but they’re also individuals, doing their own thing, listening to different drummers.
