Big Tree Down

One of the large old Monterey Cypress trees in front of the Hilton Hotel on Marina Boulevard a few steps from the park entrance crashed during the night and fell across the road.  No one was hurt.  Crews from the City’s Parks and Waterfront Department were out in force in the morning to clear the road.  First they cut the trunk above the root, then they dragged the tree off the road.  Workers with smaller chain saws then went to work cutting the crown of the tree into bite size pieces for the chipper.

The tree seems to have a fairly shallow root system with many lateral extensions but no visible tap root
